turn(ターン;回転という意味)は角度の単位の一つ。 1 turn は360°、あるいは 2π ラジアンと等しい。turn は1回転することや回転運動などにも関係がある。一般的な角度を表現するには、1 turn を単位量として、1/2 turn(180°)、1/4 turn(90°、直角)のように用いられる。 1 turn は 2π (?6.283185307179586)[1] ラジアンと等しい。(半径が 1 の)単位円の周長は 2π である。 1 turn を100等分したものを 1 centiturn(センチターン)、1000等分したものを 1 milliturnと呼ぶ。1 milliturnは0.36°と等しく、21'36"とも表現できる。1 centiturnごとに目盛りを刻んだ分度器をパーセント定規(percentage protractor)などと呼ぶ。 また、航海士は伝統的に方位を32等分したものを用いている(⇒羅針図)。 turn の概念では平面上の回転が一般的に用いられる。英語では、1/2 turn と 1/4 turn は特に half-turn, quarter-turn と呼ばれている[2]。half-turn はしばしば reflection in a point(一点を中心とした対称移動)と呼ばれる。これらは 2 次元平面上での変換に対して同一であるからである。 単位値 2001年、Robert Palaisは数学をより単純でわかりやすくするために基本的な円の定数であるπ(半円のラジアン値)の代わりとしてturnでラジアンの値を表すことを提案した。このとき提案した記号はπの足を2本から3本に増やしたものであった( π π = 2 π {\displaystyle \pi \!\;\!\!\!\pi =2\pi } )[3]2010年には、Michael Hartlはこの3本足のπを2つの理由からギリシャ文字のτで代用することを提案した。それはまず τ ラジアンは円の1周 (1 turn) に対応し、 2 5 {\displaystyle {\tfrac {2}{5}}} turn あるいは 4 5 π {\displaystyle {\tfrac {4}{5}}\pi } を表すのに 2 5 τ {\displaystyle {\tfrac {2}{5}}\tau } のようなturnの分数が使えること、次にτはπと見た目が似ていて円の定数であることがそこから連想されることである。[4] Hartlの Tau Manifesto(タウの宣言)はπの代わりにτを用いればたくさんの式が簡単になることが示されている[5][6]

単位τの提案円の半径と同じ長さの弧は1ラジアンの角度に対応する。全円は1 turn、6.28ラジアンと対応しており、これをギリシャ文字タウ(τ)を用いて表す。
使用例
角度の単位として、turnやrevolution(いずれも回転を意味する)は大きな角度を表すのに便利である。例えばコイルや回転運動などがあげられる。回転数も参照。
エンジンのような機械類の回転の角速度は一般に rpm で計測される。これは1分間に何回転するかを表す単位である。
turn は external
円グラフの比率はturnの分数である。1 % は 1 centiturn である。
CSS 3 では角度の表現法の1つとして turn がサポートされている。
