「'Wreck of the Old 97'」
"Wreck of the Old 97"はRoud Folk Song Indexの777番目に収録されている。
Well, they handed him his orders in Monroe, Virginia, saying, 'Steve, you're way behind time; this is not 38 it is Old 97, you must put her into Spencer on time.'" 1865年の歌The Ship that Never Returned(en:The Ship that Never Returned
The Ship that Never Returnedやこのバラードは、カントリー・ミュージックに影響を与えた[3]。Charlie on the MTA(en:M.T.A. Well they gave him his orders in Monroe Virginia So he turned around and said to his black greasy fireman It's a mighty rough road from Lynchburg to Danville He was goin' down that grade makin' 90 miles an hour So ladies you must take warnin' I said ladies you must take warnin'
Sayin' Steve you're way behind time
This is not 38, this is ole' 97
You must put her into Spencer on time
To shovel on a little more the coal
And when we cross that White Oak Mountain
You can watch ole' 97 roll
It's a line on a three mile grade
It was on that grade that he lost his airbrakes
You can see what a jump he made
When his whistle broke into a scream
He was found in the wreck with his hand on the throttle
Scalded to death by the steam
From this time on and learn
Never speak harsh words to your true lovin' husbands
They may leave you and never return
From this time on and learn
Never speak harsh words to your true lovin' husbands
They may leave you and never return, They may leave you and never return
