1991年にtetsuya(Ba.)を中心に結成[4]。現在バンドに在籍するメンバーはtetsuyaを含め、hyde(Vo.)、ken(Gt.)、yukihiro(Dr.)の4名。過去にはhiro(Gt.)、pero(Dr.)、sakura(Dr.)がメンバーとして参加していた。バンド名はフランス語で"虹"を表しており、tetsuyaにより名付けられている。
1993年に発表した1stアルバム『DUNE』がインディーズチャートで首位を獲得するなど、インディーズシーンで絶大な人気を得て[4]、1994年7月にビデオシングル「眠りによせて」でメジャーデビューを果たす[4]。1990年代には「flower」「虹」「winter fall」「HONEY」「花葬」「Driver's High」などの楽曲でヒットを記録し[3]、2000年代・2010年代には「NEO UNIVERSE」「READY STEADY GO」「叙情詩」「MY HEART DRAWS A DREAM」「DAYBREAK'S BELL」「DRINK IT DOWN」「X X X」などでチャート首位を獲得している。そして現在までに、計12作品のスタジオ・アルバムを発表している。
楽曲は、バンド活動の最初期の頃、メンバーがルーツとする1980年代のニューウェイヴやポストパンクからの影響を感じるものが多く発表されている[3]。ただ、活動が進むにつれ、グランジやオルタナティヴ・ロックなど[3]、その時代の刺激的なサウンドを吸収し[3]、多彩なアレンジを施した独創的なポップ・ミュージックを手掛けるようになっている。また、メンバー4人全員がメインコンポーザーとして作曲を手掛け、多様な方向性のアプローチにつなげている点も、バンドの大きな特徴のひとつとなっている[3]。
1990年代後半以降の活動では、スタジアムクラスの会場で頻繁にライヴを行うようになっている。1999年には野外特設会場をまわる全12公演のツアーで65万人を動員、2000年には4大ドームツアーを敢行している。さらに2014年には、国立競技場（現：旧国立競技場）の最多収容人数記録となる8万人（2日間計16万人）を集めた公演を開催。そして近年は、各メンバーのソロ活動もしくは別バンドでの活動と並行しつつ、日本国外でもライヴを行っており[4]、これまでにソウル、台北、上海、香港、シンガポール、バンコク、ジャカルタ、パリ、ロンドン、ホノルル、ボルチモア、ニューヨークといった都市で公演を行っている。
