概要・できごと
世界の音楽界では、フェラ・クティ[注 1]、マイケル・ハッチェンス[注 2]（インエクセス）、ノトーリアスBIG[注 3]、ジョン・デンバー[注 4]らの訃報が伝えられた。
Magoo & ティンバランドのUp Jumps Da Boogie、マーク・モリソンのReturn of the Mackが、ビルボード・ポップ・チャートでもヒットした。
この年から98年にかけて、日本国内でのCD売り上げがピークに達した。
日本でシングルのミリオンヒットが16枚、アルバムのミリオンヒットが22枚。
日本で安室奈美恵がヒット連発。小室サウンドがヒットを出し続けた。小室自身も参加するglobeが、前年末発売の「Can't Stop Fallin' in Love」も両年度合算で130万枚を超えた。
日本でGLAY楽曲の大ヒット。ベスト盤も大ヒットした。同年にスマッシュヒットしたL'Arc?en?Cielと共に、2000年頃までバンドブームの先頭役となる。

LUNA SEAがバンド活動を休止し、各メンバーがソロ活動。本名の河村隆一名義で活動したボーカルのRYUICHIは、同年に発売されたシングル4作品がすべて年間セールス50位以内にランクインした。
日本でのCDプレーヤーの普及率 57.9% (内閣府「消費動向調査」)[1]。
