アメリカ合衆国では、公務員は「大統領の意向により (at the pleasure of the president)」仕えると言われた時、これはその人物が大統領によって免職されるまで仕えることを意味する。1997年6月までイギリスの統治下にあった香港では中国への返還後、「長官裁量によって (at executive discretion)」という表現に変わった[9]。ボツワナでは「大統領の仰せのままに (during the President's pleasure)」となる[10]。
