^ 駅舎は「本屋」（ほんや・ほんおく）とも呼ばれるが、これは明治期に「Booking Office」を直訳したものである。駅舎と本屋は同義語と捉えて問題ない駅が殆どであるが、本屋とは、鉄道事業者が定めた駅の中心点を含めた構造物又はエリアを示すものである。
^ 一例として、1900年（明治33年）初出の『鉄道唱歌』歌詞に見ることが出来る。
^ 「ステン所」や「蒸気車会所」と言う呼び名もあったとする者もいるが典拠不明。
^ 東武ワールドスクウェア駅（2017年開設）や、かつての博物館動物園駅（1997年休止、2004年廃止）、2017年現在は全普通列車が停車しているファミリー公園前駅（1985 - 1993年の間）、大外羽駅（1974 - 1986年の間）等。
^ 北新地駅のように、既設の地下街と接続するのみで、地上構造物が皆無な例もある。
