釧路市（くしろし）は、北海道東部（道東地方）の太平洋沿岸にある市。釧路総合振興局の振興局所在地。計量特定市に指定されている。
概要

道東地方を管轄する国や道の出先機関のほか、日本銀行支店や外国の領事館や国際機関の置かれている道東の政治経済の中心都市である。国内の市町村では面積第7位（香川県の7割相当）。人口はかつて札幌市、旭川市、函館市に次ぐ道内4位であったが、1984年以降は減少が進み2022年現在は苫小牧市、帯広市に抜かれ6位である [1]。東北海道最大の歓楽街末広歓楽街を有する。飲食店数は北海道２位の規模である。

2014年（平成26年）4月1日には全域が過疎地域に指定された [2]。国際バルク戦略港湾（穀物）に選定 [3] された釧路港を持ち、製紙工場や食料品工場、医薬品製造工場、発電所などを擁する臨海工業都市である。また、多くの観光客が来る釧路空港と、釧路湿原国立公園および阿寒摩周国立公園の2つの国立公園を市域に有する。小惑星 (4096) Kushiroは釧路市にちなんで命名された [4][5]。
市名の由来

「釧路」という地名の由来は下記のように諸説あり不明であるが、いずれもアイヌ語に漢字にあてたものとされている [6]。
