都道府県庁所在地は、地方自治法に基づいて各都道府県が定めた都道府県庁の位置を定める条例に基づく（2009年（平成21年）4月現在）[13]。

道府県庁所在地はいずれも普通地方公共団体である。しかし、東京都庁所在地のみ国土地理院に使用されている「東京」[4][5]または特別地方公共団体の新宿区である[9][14]。｢東京」は慣例的に用いられているためである[8][9][注 2]。

「位置」は、各都道府県庁所在地の自治体の本庁舎の場所。

「集積度」は、各都道府県における都道府県庁所在地の最新の人口比率（北海道のみ登録人口、北海道以外は推計人口による）。
