^ 注：デカルトが提示した方法論（一連の基準のセット）それ自体は、科学的方法の古典版、知識の探求方法として、現代でもそれなりに評価されている。（これについては科学的方法も参照可能）。「還元主義」と呼ばれ問題が指摘されているのは、デカルトがワンセットで示した基準をきちんと全部守ることができず、異なったやり方に陥り、（ほとんど無意識に、無自覚的、自動的に）下位構造ばかりに意識の焦点が移っていってしまう思考形態、あるいは、言い換えを行ってそれで「事たれり」、としてしまう考え方である[要出典]。そしてそのような説明で説明として十分だと（半ば狂信的に）思い込んでしまい、デカルトが提示していた、より理想的なプロセスまでいつしか拒絶してしまう思考形態である[要出典]。
