1988年（民国77年）1月13日、?経国が77歳で死去すると?孝勇も中国国民党の中央委員に選ばれ、今後も政界で活躍するかと思われたがその直後に突如出国し、カナダに移住した（後にはカナダ国籍を取得している）。

その後、父の後継者でもある李登輝が進めた「一つの中国、一つの台湾」という方針に不満を抱き、1996年（民国85年）に行われた初の直接民選による中華民国総統選挙では白票を投じた。また、新聞に寄稿し台湾による中国統一を主張する新党への投票を呼びかけるなど、活発な政治的活動を行った。しかしこの時、?孝勇はすでにガンに侵されていた。

同年5月、?介石の孫（同じく孫の章孝慈が先に訪中はしていたが桂林の母・章亜若の墓を訪れたとされる[2]）として初めて中華人民共和国浙江省奉化市の故地で?家の墓を訪れ[3]、同12月22日、食道ガンのため台北の病院でその48年の生涯を閉じた。すでに2人の兄も死去しており、これによって?経国と?方良の間に生まれた3人の息子は全員故人となった。
家族

祖父母の?介石・宋美齢に非常に愛され、?介石が満面の笑みで幼い彼を抱いた写真が残っている。

同母兄弟の内、長兄の?孝文（中国語版）はアメリカ留学後に党の幹部となっていたが、遺伝性の糖尿病と過度の飲酒により1970年（民国59年）に35歳で病に倒れ、以後1989年（民国78年）の死まで寝たきり状態であった。そのため次兄の?孝武（中国語版）が後継者と見做されていたが、彼は江南事件（1984年、国民党の内情を暴露しようとした作家の劉宜良（江南）が暗殺された事件）の黒幕とされ、また素行も悪かったためその座を追われた。彼もまた1991年（民国80年）、46歳で亡くなっている。

陸軍学校在学中に後の妻となる方智怡（中国語版）と恋に落ち、1973年7月23日に結婚した。2人の間には?友柏、?友常（中国語版）、?友青（中国語版）の三男が生まれている。妻の方智怡は現在国民党中央常務委員を務める政治家、?友柏・?友常の兄弟は実業家である。中でも方智怡は?介石父子の亡骸の台湾島内での移葬を拒否して中国浙江省の故郷に帰葬することを求め[4]、?友柏は?家の過去の行いを批判するなど、ともに政治的発言が話題になっていることで知られている。
