茂原市（もばらし）は、千葉県の東部に位置する市。

都市雇用圏における東京都市圏であり、茂原商圏を形成する準商業中心都市[1]。地方拠点都市に指定されている[2]。
概要

1891年（明治24年）、大多喜町において醤油醸造業者である山崎屋太田卯八郎によって南関東ガス田が発見され、近代産業が発展した。南関東ガス田としての天然ガス可採埋蔵量は3,685億m3[3]、千葉県全体としての生産量は世界全体の約40%を占めており、茂原市の天然ガス埋蔵量は約1,000億m3、これは年間生産量に換算し600年分[4][3]であり、天然ガス生産量日本一と知られる資源都市である。それに伴い、市内には数多くの関係企業が立地している。
