国府府守神社（和歌山市府中）の紀伊国府跡碑府中遺跡と府守神社（奥）2019年発掘調査時。国府は名草郡に存在した。『和名抄』や『大御記』の記載からは10世紀以降には和歌山市府中（府守神社付近、.mw-parser-output .geo-default,.mw-parser-output .geo-dms,.mw-parser-output .geo-dec{display:inline}.mw-parser-output .geo-nondefault,.mw-parser-output .geo-multi-punct,.mw-parser-output .geo-inline-hidden{display:none}.mw-parser-output .longitude,.mw-parser-output .latitude{white-space:nowrap}北緯34度16分4.75秒 東経135度14分1.30秒 / 北緯34.2679861度 東経135.2336944度 / 34.2679861; 135.2336944 (紀伊国府推定地：府守神社)）に所在したと推定され、それ以前については和歌山市府中とする説のほか岡田遺跡（岩出市）とする説が挙げられている。2019年度（令和元年度）の府中遺跡（和歌山市府中）における発掘調査では奈良時代の推定国府関連遺構として大型建物・塀が認められており、10世紀以前にも和歌山市府中に国府が存在した可能性が示唆されている[4]。
