^ 従来、ネーデルラントの毛織物工業はその南部（現、ベルギー）が中心地であったが、オランダ独立戦争（八十年戦争）中、毛織物業者の多くがスペイン支配をのがれるため北部（現、オランダ）に移住してきたため、毛織物業の面でもオランダとイギリスは競争関係にあった。『ブリタニカ国際大百科事典3』（1972）「オランダ戦争」p.492
^ 「三王国戦争（Wars of the Three Kingdoms）」は、日本では「清教徒革命」と称されることの多い歴史事象である。議会派・革命軍と王党派の軍がイングランド・スコットランド・アイルランドの三王国にまたがって戦われた一連の戦争であるため、そう呼称される。
^ カルヴァン派は、イングランドではピューリタン（清教徒）、スコットランドではプレスビテリアン、オランダではゴイセン（「乞食」に由来）と呼ばれた。
^ 共和政時代のイングランドでは、反革命の拠点であったアイルランドとスコットランドが征服対象となり、ヨーロッパ大陸ではユグノーなどプロテスタント諸勢力を支援してカトリック諸国に打撃を加え、一方でオランダは通商上のライバルとみなされた。岩井（1998）pp.197-199
^ 当時、オランダには明白な敵国は存在しなかったが、イングランドはスチュアート家を強固に支持するフランスとの間で宣戦布告なき戦争といえる状況下にあった。
