真言宗（しんごんしゅう）は、空海（弘法大師）によって9世紀（平安時代）初頭に開かれた大乗仏教の宗派で日本仏教のひとつ。空海が長安に渡り、青龍寺で恵果から学んだ中国密教（唐密）を基盤としている。
空海は著作『秘密曼荼羅十住心論』『秘蔵宝鑰』で、当時に伝来していた仏教各派の教学に一応の評価を与えつつも密教を最上位に置き、十段階の思想体系の中に組み込んだ。最終的には顕教と比べて、密教（真言密教）の優位性、顕教の思想・経典も真言密教に包摂されることを説いた。
