一方、「ドク」が慶尚道ではなく全羅道の方言であることを主張した論述には、慎鏞廈『独島の民族領土史研究』（1996年、知識産業社）などがある[3][7]。慎鏞廈は、当時鬱陵島島民の多数は全羅道からの出稼ぎ漁民であって、朝鮮共通語で「石」をあらわす「ドル」は全羅道方言では「ドク」であるところから、大韓帝国政府は「ドクソム（石の島）」を意訳して勅令では「石島」、発音を採用すれば「独島」と表記されると述べた[3]。韓国政府も公式に「独島」は石島の呼称に由来すると説明しており[2][3][4][5]、学校教育を通じて生徒にも「トルソム → ドクソム → 石島 → 独島は全て独島の名称として使われていた」と教えている[4]。
