^ このような「スパイ活動遂行の目的で捏造された架空の出自（ドイツ語版）」（fabricated backstory for spy）を俗に独: ?Legende“, 英: "legend", 「レジェンド」（レゲンデ）という。英語版ウィクショナリーの当該項目に、使用されている文献（フィクション、ノンフィクションなど含めて）の引用が記載されている。但しドイツ語の"Legende"は刑事訴訟法110a条及び110c条（§110a und §110c StPO）に記載されている正式な用語である。
また正式な捜査資料に記載されている例として次が挙げられる。2010年、FBIはアメリカ国内で諜報活動に関与したアンナ・チャップマン等ロシア対外情報庁（SVR）の秘密工作員10名を逮捕した（イリーガルズ・プログラム（英語版））。その後情報公開法（英語版）に基づき公開された捜査関連資料にこの意味で「レジェンド」という語が用いられているのが分かる（Ghost Stories: Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Illegals, Document Item 88 Part 01, p. 6-）。またこの資料ではでっち上げた移民許可証などを含む「レジェンド」を使用する人物のことを「イリーガルズ」（"illegals". 原義は「不法滞在者」）と呼称している。
