初期の頃の明瞭度の測定方法は信頼性が低く、1960年に ANSI が発表した単音節の試験標準（ANSI S3.2-1960）では、異なったシステムや条件、別の研究所の間での結果の正確な比較はできない、との記述がある[12]。
そのため、その後測定方法の研究・標準化が行われ、また様々な客観評価法の研究が行われた。
