播磨国府は、『和名抄』によれば飾磨郡にあった。姫路市中心部にある本町遺跡（姫路市本町、.mw-parser-output .geo-default,.mw-parser-output .geo-dms,.mw-parser-output .geo-dec{display:inline}.mw-parser-output .geo-nondefault,.mw-parser-output .geo-multi-punct,.mw-parser-output .geo-inline-hidden{display:none}.mw-parser-output .longitude,.mw-parser-output .latitude{white-space:nowrap}北緯34度50分4.85秒東経134度41分44.96秒 / 北緯34.8346806度東経134.6958222度 / 34.8346806; 134.6958222 (播磨国府推定地：本町遺跡)）を国衙跡とする説が有力視されており、1984年（昭和59年）の姫路郵便局東側（前記箇所）をはじめとして [3]周辺からは2015年（平成27年）には市内中心部の平野町で [4][5]、2019年（平成31年・令和元年）には同・大黒壱丁町で [6]も奈良時代の大量の瓦や建物の柱跡が発見されている。
