^ 「厄介」は身内を意味し[15]、すなわち部屋住みのこと。
^ 特に第11代将軍家斉の実父である一橋家2代治済は生前従一位准大臣にまで昇り、没後太政大臣を追贈された。
^ それぞれの屋敷地が所在する、江戸城内の最も近い城門の名称に由来する[2]。
^ 賄料が10万石となる前は、合力米3万俵が御両卿の宗武と宗尹へ与えられていた[10]。

^ 幕末には状況が変わり、一橋家時代の徳川慶喜は幕政に名実ともに深く関わることになると、家臣と共に幕政や家領の経営に当たり、また直属の兵力の必要から領国で農兵の徴募を行った。募兵に働いた渋沢栄一や渋沢成一郎は幕臣からの出向でなく、新規に領外の豪農から士分に取り立てられて一橋家中に御抱入として加わり、慶喜の将軍就任後は将軍直臣（旗本）に転じた。また、徳川昭武は領国経営にこそ関わらなかったものの、清水家時代のほぼ全期をヨーロッパで過ごしており、幕府の遣欧使節団の代表を務めた後に留学生活を送っている。その他の当主も、幼少で家督を継いだ田安家の寿千代や亀之助（徳川家達）以外は幕政に多少なりとも関わっている。
