^ 印欧諸語のmetaphysics、Metaphysikなどの訳語として、日本語をはじめとする漢字文化圏では、「形而上学」を当てており、これは『易経』繋辞上伝の“形而上者謂之道、形而下者謂之器”（形よりして上なる者これを道と謂い、形よりして下なる者これを器と謂う）という表現にちなんだ造語である。印欧語のmetaには、「?の背後に」のほかにも「?を超えた」という意味があり、自然を規定する超越者の学という意味では（語源を表現しきれていないことを除いては）学の内容をよくあらわしている。
