弥生時代（やよいじだい、.mw-parser-output .lang-ja-serif{font-family:YuMincho,"Yu Mincho","ヒラギノ明朝","Noto Serif JP","Noto Sans CJK JP",serif}.mw-parser-output .lang-ja-sans{font-family:YuGothic,"Yu Gothic","ヒラギノ角ゴ","Noto Sans CJK JP",sans-serif}旧字体：彌生時代）は、日本列島における時代区分の一つであり、「日本で食糧生産が始まってから前方後円墳が出現するまでの時代 [1]」とされる。年代としては紀元前10世紀から紀元後3世紀中頃までにあたる [2][注釈 1]。採集経済の縄文時代の後、水稲農耕を主とした生産経済の時代である。弥生時代後期後半の紀元1世紀頃、東海・北陸を含む西日本各地で広域地域勢力が形成され [3]、2世紀末畿内に倭国が成立した [4]。一般的に3世紀中頃古墳時代に移行したとされるが、古墳時代の開始年代には異論もある。
名称弥生土器

「弥生」という名称は、1884年（明治17年）に弥生町遺跡 [注釈 2]で発見された土器が発見地に因み「弥生式土器」と呼ばれたことに由来する [5][注釈 3]。当初は「弥生式土器」の使われた時代ということで「弥生式時代」と呼ばれたが、その後佐原真の提言などで土器や年代の名称に「式」を使うことの不合理が説かれ、「弥生土器」の呼称が提唱され [6]、徐々に「式」を省略する呼称（弥生土器・弥生時代）が一般的となった。
概要

紀元前10世紀または紀元前5世紀、紀元前4世紀頃 [2]（後述）に、大陸から北部九州へと伝来した水稲耕作技術を中心とした生活体系へ移行し、やがて九州・四国・本州 [7]に広がった。
