例えば、映画『メリー・ポピンズ』のガヴァネスを演じたジュリー・アンドリュースの発音は歯切れがよく、訛りのない容認発音とされる。アンドリュース主演の『サウンド・オブ・ミュージック』でもまったく同じ話し方をしているが、BBC英語に属する類いの、いわゆる「標準英語」である。訛りのある階級に育った者でも、教師、医師、弁護士など、相手の信頼を必要とする職業につく者は、訓練でこういう話し方および発声を身につける必要があった（気取っている印象を与えるのでかえって不利だとされ、地方訛りを身につける例もある）[8]。

特徴

ask、bath、chance など（後続の子音が「二字一音の摩擦音」「摩擦音＋破裂音」や「鼻音＋他の子音」であることが多いが、規則的ではない）の a は RP（容認発音）では非円唇後舌広母音 [?] となる。

player など音節末の r（r音化）は RP（容認発音）では発音されない（[ple??]）。ただし、for a long time など後ろに母音が続く場合は連音化（リエゾン）を起こす。

stop などの o は円唇後舌広母音である（[st?p]）。

better など母音間・強勢後の /t/ は [t]（ベター）とアメリカ英語よりもはっきり発音（アメリカ英語は弾音。RP 以外のイギリス式発音は声門閉鎖音が多い）。

bluntness などの /t/ は声門閉鎖音 [?] になる。

head など語頭の /h/ を発音する（イングランドでは発音しない人も少なくない）。

/ou/ を [o?] ではなく [??] で発音する。[??] のように聞こえることもある。

new を [nju?]（ニュー）、tune を [tju?n]（テューン）と発音する（アメリカ英語では [nu?]（ヌー）、[tu?n]（トゥーン）と発音する人が多い）。

古い発音

off、cloth、gone などを [?] でなく [??] とする。
