^ 契丹語はモンゴル語族に属するか或はモンゴル語と非常に近しい[7]。
^ 『魏書』契丹伝および『遼史』は『魏書』顕祖紀、勿吉伝と記述が異なり、匹黎爾部を匹絜部と黎部の2つの部と錯誤。また、羽真侯部を契丹古八部から漏らしたとされる。
^ 新唐書には?便部とあるが、音的に後の乙室活部に対応すると思われるので、誤字とされる。
^ 但し、現代のロシア語では契丹のことは普通Киданиと呼び、中国と混同することはない。
^ これらの名称は本来、シルクロードで結ばれた陸にある中国という概念を指した。マルコ・ポーロで有名な「カタイ」がこれと同じである。一方、China系の名称は海から行く中国という概念を指した。ヨーロッパでは長い間中国はひとつなのかふたつなのかという論争があり、これら二系統の名称は、どちらも同じ国のことを指しているのだということが明らかになる明?清初期まで西欧で用いられた。西欧ではその後China系に淘汰されていったが、逆にロシアやモンゴルといった「海の中国」と関わりの薄い地域では「陸の中国」であるCathay系の名称が現代に至るまで使われている（ロシア語にはChinaに相当する単語は存在しない）。
