奈良市（ならし）は、奈良県の北部に位置する市。奈良県の県庁所在地及び人口が最多の市であり、中核市に指定されている。

奈良時代に都が置かれたことから古都と呼ばれる。また、京都に対して南都とも呼ばれた[4]。
地理

奈良市は、奈良県北部の奈良盆地北端にある。市街地の標高は約60mである[5]。市東部は大和高原の一部をなし、標高300mから600m級の高地が続く。市街の北は古代に平城山（ならやま）と呼ばれた丘陵地帯で京都府と接している。平城山を越えて山城と通じる奈良坂は古くからの重要交通路の一つ。

市域は東西に広く、(1) 東部の山間地、(2) 文化財を多数抱え国際観光文化都市としての顔を持つ中東部の中心市街地、(3) 大阪の衛星都市・ベッドタウンとしての性格を持ち住宅地として開発が行われてきた西部と、複数の顔を持ち、同じ市内でありながら地域の雰囲気、住民の指向は違いを見せる。

都市名の由来

古くは、今の奈良市域を添（そほり）と称した。

市街地が広がる一帯は平坦な地形で、この均（なら）したような地形が「奈良」の都市名の由来となったのではないかとする説が有力である。

現在の漢字表記は「奈良」だが、古文書などの中では「那羅」「寧楽」「平城」とも表記されている。
気候

瀬戸内海式気候と内陸性気候を併せ持つ。市街は盆地に位置するため、夏と冬、そして1日の気温差が大きい。同じく盆地に位置する京都よりも冬季の気温は低い。
