天狗党の乱（てんぐとうのらん）は、元治元年（1864年）に筑波山で挙兵した水戸藩内外の尊王攘夷派（天狗党）によって起こされた一連の争乱。元治甲子の乱（げんじかっしのらん）[注 1][1]ともいう。
背景
天狗党の発生

文政12年（1829年）9月、重病に伏していた水戸藩第8代藩主・徳川斉脩は、後継者を公にしていなかった。そんな中、江戸家老・榊原照昌らは、斉脩の異母弟・敬三郎（斉昭）は後継者として不適当であるから、代わりに斉脩正室・峰姫の弟でもある第11代将軍徳川家斉の二十一男・清水恒之丞（のちの紀州藩主徳川斉彊）を迎えるべきだと主張し、藩内門閥層の大多数も、財政破綻状態にあった水戸藩へ幕府からの援助が下されることを期待してこの案に賛成した。
