^ 震災復興のための資金が切迫していた日本政府は日本が未開国扱いされていた明治初期水準の高い利息を付けて外貨を調達せざるを得ず、日本国内では「国辱公債」とも揶揄された。この時期には東京・横浜両市も復興の為の外債発行を行っている。また、この時期に社債募集に悩んでいた電力会社がニューヨーク市場の好調ぶりに目をつけて相次いで現地で外債を発行した。
^ 外債は以後順調に償還された。円建ての償還金は日本に滞留し、海外投資家の紐つきという広い意味での蓄積円となった。これは、投資国企業の日本子会社がオイルショックを自己金融でやり過ごすのに使われた。合衆国企業の場合はヨーロッパ通貨も還ってきていたので、ヨーロッパ子会社を維持し親会社の負担を減らすのに同様の戦略を用いた。

^ 円貨建外債（えんかだてがいさい）とは、日本以外の国家及び日本に本拠地を持たない機関・法人などが、日本市場において日本円による額面表記をもって発行する債券の事である。円建て外債（えんだてがいさい）あるいはサムライ債とも呼ばれる。発行者は外国政府、政府機関、自治体、企業、国際機関など。発行から償還まで、全てが日本円で行われる。1970年のアジア開発銀行債が第1号の円貨建外債である。
