圧縮空気の品質、すなわち清浄度については様々な規格が存在するが、一般的にはISO8573-1 (JIS B 8392-1) が適用される。圧縮空気中の主要な汚染物質は、①固体粒子・②水・③オイルの3種類で、これらの「清浄等級」が規定されており、
①固体粒子は、粒子サイズ0.1 - 5 μmの、それぞれの単位体積中の最大粒子数
②水は、液体と蒸気の両方で圧力露点 ℃
③油は、エアロゾル (aerosol) と蒸気の両方で、単位体積中の総濃度 (mg/m3)
で等級分けされている。
ガス状汚染物質や微生物汚染物質の等級はこの規格では規定されていないが、微生物（細菌・酵母及び真菌、microbiological contaminants）は、試験規格ISO 8573-7(JIS B 8392-7)による単位体積あたりのコロニー個数を意味するCFU (Colony Forming Unit)が示されている。ただしこの規格は、呼吸用・医療用・食品及び飲料製造用の空気には適用されない。あくまで一般の工業用圧縮空気に適用されるものである[2]。
