注釈^ 同じ文字の単語として、紀元前の中国で成立した歴史書「国語」があるが、この書名の「国」は特定の国ではなく「諸国」を、「語」は語る手段としての言語ではなく「語られた内容」を指し、本稿の「国語」とは全く意味が異なる。
^ ただし、ベトナムにおける「國語」はベトナム語を表記するラテン文字を指し、意味的には「国字」に近い。
^ 「真に国家語」ということは、裏を返すと「真ではない国家語」がある、と、（感情的になって）主張しているわけである。日本人にはありがちだが、三省堂『言語学大辞典』の執筆者にも、多民族国家を尊重する態度や配慮が欠けてしまっている。世界を見渡すと多民族国家は非常に多く、多民族国家が多民族国家として繁栄する上では、つまり多くの民族が国家内で共存共栄してゆくうえでは、国家名を冠しない言語を国家語として尊重することがどれほど大切なのか、国家名を冠しない言語も国家語として認定し「真に国家語である」と尊重することが人々が共存共栄してゆく上で非常に大切だ、という根本的なことが、いまだに分かっていない日本人がいるのである。
