^ 「氏」の字義は、小刀の意味で、同じ食事を分かつ同族を意味する。
^ 土地という財産を相続することが重要になった中世では、[[荘園 (日本)|]]の所在地や土地名を苗字にして個人に始まる一族の所有を主張した。このため親兄弟とも苗字が異なるということは頻繁に起き、特殊な事情を除いて親子では名字が同じという現代の名字の感性とはかなり異なり、家系のつながりを知るのに難しさを生じることがある。さらに一個人も荘園を移動することでまた苗字が変わるため、一層複雑になる。
^ このことは特に日本おける住所表記の慣習にも現れている。海外では住所を表すのに一般に道路名が使われるが、日本では一定の領域の土地名が使われる。これは日本での徴税制度と深く関係する。田租は、「誰から」ではなく「何処から」徴税したのかを重視した。災害が発生したり分家が行われたりなどで元の土地を離れて新しい土地に移ると、その新しい土地からの徴税にその土地が誰のものか知る必要がある。そのため納税したものが誰かを主張するため土地に自分の名前をつけ、土地名と一体化した。土地は世襲されるため個人名である必要はなかった。
^ 英語では洗礼名（英: christian name , Holly）と同義。
^ 現代でもそのような場合に苗字だけで（もしくは「?さん」をつけることがある）ても個人が特定できるため実名を使わない。また苗字や名前を使わず、ただ「先生」・「社長」・「お父さん」・「お兄さん」などで個人を特定して呼ぶことがある。
^ 「德川次郎三郎源朝臣家康」とも表記される。
^ 「大相國」は朝廷の最高官位である太政大臣の唐名。
^ 「東照大権現」は神号。「安国院」は院号で「殿」は尊称。「崇譽」は浄土宗での道号で必ず「誉」が附く。「道和」は名号、「大居士」は位号[7]。
