2016年7月，市政府と文化部は台中州庁を都市型博物館とする計画案で認識を一致させた。元は古蹟を利用した懐古調の宿泊施設とする計画だったが、前年末の台中市長選挙で勝利した新市長林佳龍によって計画案が修正されていた[5]。

2017年4月、市は台中州庁、大屯郡役所、台中州庁付帯建築群と旧市議会の修復、周辺空間と一体となった開発、景観改造として総事業費3.5億元（中央政府補助2.1億元，市政府負担1.4億元）を投じた再開発計画を始動、2020年の完工後に現代美術館（国立台湾美術館の分館）として生まれ変わる計画だったが[6]、2020年2月に新市長盧秀燕は「旧州庁は総統府と同等の価値がある」と無償譲渡での国立美術館への転用を拒否[7]。

2019年4月、国定古蹟に昇格[8]。

2020年8月より本格修復が開始された[9]。

2021年1月、建物内から防空壕や金庫が発見された[10]。市政府は専門業者へ金庫の解錠を依頼する意向を表明している[11]。
