「北部アメリカ」の用語が使用された地図はフランス王国、大英帝国及びスペイン帝国によって分割されていた1755年にまで遡る[4]。1813年のSolemn Act of the Declaration of Independence of Northern Americaはメキシコにまで適用されていた。今日、人間開発指数が非常に高く、経済社会的に多様性を有する先進国であるアメリカ合衆国及びカナダの二者を北部アメリカに含めている[5]。
