北海道（ほっかいどう）は、日本の北海道地方に位置する道。道庁所在地は札幌市で、47都道府県中唯一の「道」である。
概要

この島を居住地の一つとするアイヌの言葉（アイヌ語）では、「アィヌモシ?」（ainu mosir、「人間の住む土地」の意）または「ヤウンモシ?」（ya un mosir、「陸地の国土」）[4] と呼ばれる（なおアイヌモシ?とはカムイモシ?（神々の土地）に対比される語であり、今日の北海道という地理的概念と同じ言葉ではない）。日本人（和人）は古代には渡嶋（わたりのしま）、近代に至るまでアイヌを蝦夷（えぞ）、その土地を蝦夷地（えぞち）もしくは北州、十州島などと呼んでいた [注釈 2][注釈 3]。
