^ 1956年には公式には大会中止という扱いになっているが、世界選手権の代表決定戦として、事実上の全日本選手権とも言える「世界柔道選手権日本代表決定戦」が世界選手権直前の4月29日に蔵前国技館で慌ただしく開催されている。この大会は、全国10地区選出の32選手をA,Bの2ブロックに分け、それぞれのブロックの優勝者2名を日本代表として選出するというものだった。Aブロックでは決勝戦を夏井昇吉と醍醐敏郎で争い2分22秒に夏井が体落で一本勝ち、Bブロックでは松本安市と吉松義彦という武専出身者同士の顔合わせで試合時間20分一杯を闘い、判定の末に吉松が勝利を収めた。柔道評論家の工藤雷介によるこの大会の戦評が、ベースボール・マガジン社発刊の雑誌『近代柔道』（1981年3月号）の「名勝負シリーズ」という特集記事で詳しく紹介されている。なお、4日後に開催された世界選手権では夏井が金メダル、吉松が銀メダルを獲得している。
^ この年の全日本選手権では、指定選手16名と全国10地区から選出された32名の計48名による出場者が3名1組によるリーグ戦を初日に行い、各組の勝者16名が翌日の決勝トーナメントで優勝を争う形式で大会が開催された。
