上毛三山のうち、火山である赤城山と榛名山はいずれも那須火山帯に属している。市街地からでも山並みがよく見えることもあり、群馬県民にはとても親しまれている。群馬県内の中学校・高校の校歌にこの語句が含まれていることが多く、群馬県の郷土かるたである上毛かるたにも、これらの山について詠まれた歌がある。群馬県で北を見て、中央の榛名山が一番若い山で、右（東）の赤城山が次に侵食が進んだ山で、左（西）の妙義山が一番侵食が進んだ山である、という説明がよく行われる。

毎年1月1日に群馬県を舞台に行われる全日本実業団対抗駅伝大会（ニューイヤー駅伝）は、上毛三山のそれぞれを見ながら走る100kmのコースとなっている。

群馬県内の小学校では、運動会のときの組分けを、この上毛三山の名前を用いて「赤城団」「榛名団」「妙義団」の3組とし、対抗させる例が多数存在する（地域によって異なり、また人数が少ない場合や主に太田市以東などでは「紅組」「白組」に取り決める学校が多い。逆に人数が多い場合は、同じく有名な山である浅間山を追加して「浅間団」としたり、白根山を追加して「白根団」としたりすることもある）。 川の名前を用いて、「利根団」「碓氷団」「烏団」「渡良瀬団」の場合もある。

上毛かるた大会では、団体戦に限り「す」「も」「の」は『三山札』という役札となり、全部取ると10点が加算される[2][注 3]。

上毛新聞のコラム「三山春秋（みやましゅんじゅう）」は、上毛三山にちなんで名づけられたものである。
