1967年3月12日にアルバムは発売された。ジャケットはウォーホルのデザイン。バナナ絵のジャケットからバナナ・アルバムとも呼ばれる。バナナの絵の端にはPeel Slowly and See（ゆっくりはがして、見ろ）と書かれていて、初期の盤では貼ってあるバナナのステッカーをはがすとバナナの果肉が現れる。
ブライアン・イーノは1982年に受けた『Musician』のインタビューで本作品について次のように述べている（インタビュアーはジャーナリストのクリスティン・マッケンナ）。先日ルー・リードと話をしたんだ。彼によるとヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドのファースト・アルバムは5年間で3万枚しか売れなかったそうだ。最近でこそ売り行きが伸びてるみたいだけどね。しかしあんなに重要なレコードはない。なにしろ買った3万人が全員バンドを始めたんだからね[8]。
