^ この伝説は『画家・彫刻家・建築家列伝』を底本とした、ドイツ人画家、詩人カレル・ヴァン・マンデルの著書『画家列伝（画家の書）』で、さらに広く流布した。実際には木材などの着色料として油絵具が使用されてきた歴史は古く、様々な美術に関する著作を残したベネディクト会修道士テオフィロスが1125年に書いた論文『諸技芸大要』に説明されている。現在では、初期フランドル派の第一世代の画家であるヤンとフーベルトのファン・エイク兄弟が精緻な板絵を制作するために油絵具を取り入れ、様々な油彩技法を試行、確立することによって、それまでにない目覚しい効果をあげることに成功したと見なされている。(Gombrich, E.H., The Story of Art, pp 236 - 239.
