注釈^ 鎖港中の17世紀半 - 19世紀半、対馬（中国）、長崎（オランダ）、薩摩（琉球）の3つの窓口と呼ばれる外交窓口を開き、貿易を行っており、長崎では当時既にオランダを通じて金や銀を輸出し、アメリカからも毛皮などを輸入していた。その背景から「鎖国」の有無の認識が変わりつつあり、ペリーは「開国」ではなく「開港」を要求したと一部の教科書の表記も更新されている。
^ 日本との交渉の任務は当初先代の司令官であるジョン・オーリックに与えられたが、オーリックは部下とトラブルを起こしたため病気を理由に解任され、ペリーがその任務を引き継いだ（ただし発砲は禁止された）。
^ 但し、蒸気機関車模型の運転に関しては、エフィム・プチャーチンが長崎で披露した方が若干早かった（1853年8月24日）。これに立ち会った佐賀藩の本島藤太夫と中村奇輔であった。中村は石黒寛次、田中久重（からくり儀右衛門）と協力し、およそ2年後の1855年8月1日に、模型の蒸気機関車を作製、藩主鍋島直正に披露した。
^ 上喜撰とは緑茶の銘柄である「喜撰」の上物という意味であり、「上喜撰の茶を四杯飲んだだけだが（カフェインの作用により）夜眠れなくなる」という表向きの意味と、「わずか四杯（ときに船を1杯、2杯とも数える）の異国からの蒸気船（上喜撰）のために国内が騒乱し夜も眠れないでいる」という意味をかけて揶揄している。
