妻は『グッド・モーニング・アメリカ』（米・ABC）でアンカーを務め、現在は『ABCワールドニュース』（米・ABC）アンカーとしてアメリカを代表するニュースキャスターであるダイアン・ソイヤー。息子は映画監督のマックス・ニコルズ[5]。

2014年11月19日、心不全で逝去。83歳没[6]。
