ポタリングは、「のんびりする」「ぶらつく」[3]「目的もなくゆっくりうろつく」[4]という意味のイギリス英語「potter」を語源とし[注釈 1]、これに現在分詞や動名詞を示す接尾辞「-ing」を付けた、和製英語の名詞である[6]。英語で名詞として pottering（puttering）というと、potter の動名詞としての意味「のんびりすること」「ぶらつくこと」になる[注釈 2]。和製英語「ポタリング」の意味を英語で表すと、「bicycling around aimlessly」「taking a long comfortable bicycle ride」である[8]。

注釈^ potterとputterは英語・米語のスペル違いであり[5]、米国ではputterの方が一般的な表現である。
^ 英語の pottering の用例で、和製英語のポタリングに比較的近いものは、例えば、ヨットを題材とした文献で確認できる。pottering はヨットの使い方の名称として記載されることがあり、遠方まで航行する cruising、速さを競う競技 racing と対比される[7]。
