フィリピン諸島は、フィリピン海を挟んで日本とパラオ、バシー海峡を挟んで台湾、スールー海を挟んでマレーシア、セレベス海を挟んでインドネシア、南シナ海を挟んで中国およびベトナムと向かい。南シナ海のスプラトリー諸島の一部を実効支配しており（パグアサ島など）、全体の領有権や領海・排他的経済水域を巡っては中国、ベトナム、台湾、マレーシアと対立を抱える。

同国は81の州と1の首都地域で構成され、最小行政単位はバランガイ（Barangay）で4万2027にのぼる。

国名のフィリピンは16世紀の旧宗主国のスペイン皇太子フェリペ（後のフェリペ2世国王）の名前から命名された。

正式名称は、タガログ語ではRepublika ng Pilipinas（レプーブリカ ナン ピリピーナース）、英語では、Republic of the Philippines（リパブリク オヴ ザ フィリピーンズ）、スペイン語では、Republica de Filipinas (レプブリカ　デ　フィリピーナス)。略称は、Pilipinas（フィリピン語）、the Philippines（英語)、Filipinas （スペイン語)。

日本語表記による正式名称の訳はフィリピン共和国、通称はフィリピンである。かつてはフイリッピン、ヒリピンという表記もなされていた。漢字による表記は、比律賓[5]、菲律賓で、比島、比、菲と略される。

国名は、1542年に、スペイン帝国皇太子フェリペ（のちの国王フェリペ2世）の名から、スペイン人の征服者ルイ・ロペス・デ・ビリャロボスによってイスラス・フィリピナス諸島(フェリペの島々)[6] と名づけられたことに由来する。現在の国号表記はアルファベット表記はすべて「-s」と複数形表記されており、これはアメリカ植民地当局がかつてこの国をフィリピン諸島（the Philippine Islands）と呼び、これをフィリピン（the Philippines）と変更したものを、1935年憲法に「フィリピン共和国（Republic of the Philippines）」と記載した経緯による。

このような歴史的背景から、植民地時代の残滓だという立場からの国名変更論もある。国民的英雄と見なされる独立運動家アンドレス・ボニファシオは、「タガログ人の国家」を意味する「カタガルガン」を推していた[7]。第10代大統領フェルディナンド・マルコスは、サンスクリット語に由来し「気高く誕生した」を意味するとされる「マハルリカ」に変更しようとした[7][8]。ロドリゴ・ドゥテルテ大統領も「マハルリカ」への変更に対する共感を表明している[8]。
