^ 提供開始後のソフトウェアにバグが発見されて適切な修正が可能になった時に、供給側からそのソフトウェアを使用している利用者に対して、多くの場合は無償でバージョンアップ用のソフトウェアが配布される。このような修正の内、小規模なものは修正パッチなどと呼ばれて、一般的なバージョンアップとは区別される傾向がある。こういったバグの修正を含んで機能向上なども行える場合には、時に有償による提供が行われる。大規模な更新などを行うもの主に指すが修正パッチを読み込むだけのものも含めて、利用者に手間を掛けずに自動的にバージョンアップ作業が行える「アップグレードツール」と呼ばれるソフトウェアがある。利用者は自らの使用しているソフトウェアのバージョンを管理しておき、新たなバージョンが提供を開始されれば、それを自ら入手して更新することが一般的であるが、一部のソフトウェア・メーカーはインターネットを経由して利用者側のソフトウェアのバージョンを把握して、新たなバージョンが配布段階になれば利用者の同意の元に自動的に更新作業を遠隔的に行えるようにしている。
^ 「エディション」で分ける例としては、マイクロソフト社のMicrosoft Windows XPには「Home Edition」、「Professional」、「Media Center Edition」といった機能の異なる複数のエディションが存在する。
^ 映画の場合の「リメイク作品」とは、自分の作品であるか他者のものであるかを問わず、過去に公開された映画をおおむね同一のプロットで（細かい点には変更が加えられることが多い）、監督、出演者などを違えてあらためて撮影・公開することを言う。
