ロックバンドがゲームミュージックをカバーとした初期の例としては、1991年にアメリカのインディーズ・バンドAutoclave（英語版）がアルバム『Autoclave（英語版）』で『ペーパーボーイ』を、Mr. Bungle（英語版）がアルバム『Mr. Bungle（英語版）』で『スーパーマリオブラザーズ』を[9]それぞれカバーしている。

ニンテンドーコアという言葉はHorse the Bandが造った新語で、元々はジョークとして使い始めた[10]。

もうひとつ、ニンテンドーコアの先駆者として挙げられるのはアドバンテージで[11]、『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』誌は、メインストリームにゲームミュージックを持ち込んだグループの一つと賞賛している[2]。
