^ 1600年頃から英国軍隊では、技術者に Trench-master の称号をつけていた。1622年頃から、Camp-master general、Engine-master 等と称され、1650年頃から、Engineer と称されるようになった(Duane (1810) p.137.)。
^ セイヴァリが蒸気の膨張力と凝縮力を使うことに気づいたきっかけについて、幾つかの説がある。熱したウィスキー瓶の中のアルコール蒸気が、水盤の水を吸い上げるのを見て気づいたとの説や、タバコを吸い終わった煙管（きせる）を水で洗うときに、煙管の中へ水が吸い込まれるのを見たとの説があるが、いずれも真偽が疑わしい。セイヴァリが、入念な設計と実験をもとに製作したのは確かである(Smiles (1865) pp.48-49.)。
^ 特許の名称は、"A new invention for raising of water and occasioning motionto all sorts of mill work by the impellent force of fire.（火力により、揚水および水車場の全作業を行うための新しい発明）"となっている(Smiles (1865) p.50.)。
^ レシーバーまたはシリンダ内に冷水を直接噴射して短時間で凝縮する方式は、既に1712年の初期のニューコメン機関で採用されていた。デサグリエは、この方式をセイヴァリ機関にも適用した。
