コロシアムが1971年10月に解散したとき、ヘクストール＝スミスはソロ・アルバムをレコーディングしたほか、マンチャイルド、スウィート・ペイン、ビッグ・チーフ、タフ・テナーズ、ザ・フェイマス・ブルースブラスターズ、メインスクィーズ、DHSSなどのさまざまなフュージョン・ユニットでフロント・マンを務めたり、演奏を行った。これらの集団の多くに共通するコラボレーション・ミュージシャンには、ヴィクター・ブロックス、キース・ティルマン、ハープ奏者でサヴォイ・ブラウンの創設メンバーであるジョン・オラーリーがいる。1980年代に彼のエレクトリック・ドリームというバンドで、ヘクストール＝スミスは南アフリカのパーカッショニストであるジュリアン・バウラとも共演した。1983年から1986年まで、ディックはジョン・ジェームス（ギター）、デイヴ・ムーア（キーボード）と共に3スペースのメンバーを務めた。デイヴはメインスクィーズで仲間だったメンバーであり、クリス・ビリングス（ベース）、ポール・ハリス（キーボード）と1度、ツアーを行った。テナーとソプラノの他に、ディックは3スペースでバリトンサックスも演奏した。
ヘクストール＝スミスは、1990年代のオリジナル・コロシアムのラインナップによる再結成に参加し、勤勉なハンブルクのブルースバンドで演奏した。2001年に彼はオールスター・プロジェクト『Blues and Beyond』を録音し、メイオール、ブルース、テイラー、元メイオールでフリートウッド・マックのギタリストであったピーター・グリーンと再会した。
ヘクストール＝スミスは、1984年に彼の機知に富んだ回想録『The Safest Place in the World』を発表した。その増補版が『Blowing the Blues』と改名されて2004年に出版された[6]。彼は急性肝不全により2004年に70歳で亡くなった[7]。
