シーボルトは高野長英から、医師以外の肩書は何か、と問われて、「コンテンス・ポンテー・ヲルテ」とラテン語で答えたと渡辺崋山が書いているが、これは「コレスポンデントヴェルデ」であり、内情探索官と訳すべきものである[7]。
事件後

シーボルトは安政5年（1858年）の日蘭修好通商条約の締結により追放が解除となり、翌安政6年（1859年）に長男アレクサンダーを伴って再来日し、幕府の外交顧問となっている。

なお、2度目の来日中の文久2年（1862年）にも、秘書役であった三瀬諸淵が、シーボルトのために日本の歴史書を翻訳した罪で捕らえられるという事件が起きている。一方、シーボルトの孫娘にあたる三瀬諸淵の妻楠本高子の手記によると、原因は他のところにあったとされている[8]。
