本作は『2分の1の魔法』と同じ週に封切られ、公開初週末に650万ドル前後を稼ぎ出すと予想されていたが[19]、実際の数字はそれを若干上回るものとなった。2020年3月6日、本作は全米2718館で封切られ、公開初週末に817万ドルを稼ぎ出し、週末興行収入ランキング初登場3位となった[20]。
評価

本作は批評家から高く評価されている。映画批評集積サイトのRotten Tomatoesには212件のレビューがあり、批評家支持率は83%、平均点は10点満点で6.8点となっている。サイト側による批評家の見解の要約は「ストーリーをお決まりの形で展開させるというやり方に苛立つこともある。しかし、ベン・アフレックの傑出した演技のお陰で『ザ・ウェイバック』はそうした欠点を上回る魅力を生み出せた。」となっている[21]。また、Metacriticには40件のレビューがあり、加重平均値は66/100となっている[22]。なお、本作のCinemaScoreはB+となっている[23]。
