1995年のエチオピア連邦民主共和国成立から数えて、4代目の大統領となる[21][22]。任期は6年[3]。エチオピアで女性が国家元首となったのはエチオピア帝国時代の女帝ザウディトゥ以来で、女性が大統領となるのは初めてであった。
