サウィンは夏の収穫を祝う行事であり[8]、余剰分の作物や屠殺された家畜が共食に供される[6][7]。死者の魂が現世に帰ってくる日だともされた[9]。異界（英語版）と通じる時期であることを利用して占いが行われる[6]。かがり火が伝統的に祝祭の一環として焚かれる[6]。

インボルク (Imbolc) 、ベルテイン (Bealtaine) そして ルーナサ (Lughnasadh) とともに、ゲール人の季節の祭りのうちの1つであり、ユール、インボルク、オスターラ（英語版）、ベルテイン、ミッドサマー、ルーナサ、メイボンと共にケルトの1年を区切る8つの祝祭の一つである[3]。

万霊節とも[10]。
語源

サウィン (Samhain) の名称は ゲール語 sam-fuin （「夏の終わり」の意味）に由来するとの説が有力[8][7]。

古代アイルランド語ではサヴァン（Samain）と呼ばれた[1]。

10月31日のハロウィーンの日は、アイルランド語で Oiche Shamhna、スコットランド・ゲール語で Oidhche Shamhna、マン島語で Oie Houney といい、「11月の夜」を意味する。11月1日や祭り期間のことは、同順に La Samhna、La Samhna、Laa Houney と「11月の日」を意味する。
誤解

サウィンは悪魔やサタンに相当する「死者の王」のための祝祭だと誤解されたことがあったが[9][8]、これは土着宗教を悪魔になぞらえようとしたカトリック教会によって広められた誤りである[9][8]。
