2016年には保健大臣に任命されたが、3万人の医療従事者と4万人の看護師がストライキを起こす可能性に直面した[9]。ハリスは同国における中絶の合法化の支持を表明している。在職中は国民投票で承認された憲法修正第36条と、憲法による中絶の禁止を削除する憲法修正第 36 条と、特定の状況下で中絶を許可する2018年保健（妊娠中絶の規制）法を担当した。2020年には新型コロナウイルスに関係する保健緊急措置法を導入[10]。

2020年6月27日には当時の首相、ミホル・マーティンから高等教育大臣に任命された[11]。2022年5月4日、彼は高等教育に持続的に資金を供給し、学生と家族の教育コストを削減するための新しい政策「Funding our Future」を発表した。2022年12月17日には法務大臣であったヘレン・マッケンティーの産休に伴い、一時的に法務大臣を務めた[12]。

2024年3月24日、レオ・バラッカーの首相辞意表明に伴う与党・統一アイルランド党の党首選挙の立候補が締め切られ、唯一の立候補者だったハリスが党首に就任[13]。同年4月9日、下院にて賛成88票、反対69票で首相指名が承認され、閣僚人事も賛成87票、反対68票で承認された。同日中にマイケル・D・ヒギンズ大統領より首相に任命され、37歳での首相就任はアイルランド史上最年少となった[1][14]。
私生活

看護師キーヴァ・ウェイドと結婚し、1男1女を儲けた[15]。現在はクローン病を患っているが、生活に支障はないと語っている[16]。
