コーネル大学のスポーツチームは「コーネル・ビッグ・レッド」と呼ばれている。コーネル大学には30以上のスポーツチームがあり、全米大学体育協会（NCAA）のカンファレンスはアイビー・リーグに所属しているが、アイスホッケーについてはECACホッケー・リーグ（ECAC Hockey League)に所属している。

コーネル大学のホームアリーナであるリナーリンク（Lynah Rink）でハーバード大学と対戦する際は、ハーバード大学の選手が入場する際に熱狂的なファンが大量の魚をリンクに投げ入れることが恒例となっている。これは、ハーバード大学が港町（ボストン）にあることを揶揄しているのである。
